Maintaining a Positive Attitude

Oftentimes we go through periods of our lives that seem so unfair and out of our control, it can cause us to retreat into ourselves and partake in self-destructive negative thinking. We all have our moments and no one can be positive 24/7 but to try to maintain a positive attitude in my opinion is much more beneficial during trying times than wallowing in negativity.

It is easy for any person to possess a positive attitude when things are going well. However, what happens when things go wrong? I feel that it is how you handle yourself during the “bad times” that determines the strength of your character. Oftentimes when things are going badly the one way to cope is by trying to find the positive. What it boils down to is no matter how bad things are for you in that moment, there is someone usually worse off than you are who is just glad to be alive. It is at this point you have to count your blessings, look for the good and embrace what opportunities are available to you at that moment.

I have found that the older I get and the more I endure the more I need to embrace that positive side of myself. For me, a positive attitude is a form of maintaining my sanity (which I know to some friends the fact I used sanity and myself in the same sentence is causing them to spit out their morning coffee..LOL). There isn’t a magic formula and there are times the negative thoughts will take over but here are ways I find to get back on track and maintain a positive attitude.

Fake it until you make it! ~ Although I believe in being authentic and that denial isn’t healthy, it really is important to acknowledge that our thoughts are more potent than we often realize. Talk positive talk! Act joyful and try to find the positive things to focus on. Think enthusiastically. Talk with passion. Your thoughts and actions set up your level of enthusiasm. I really believe that our actions become our reality and we get out of life what we put into it. Force yourself to act with enthusiasm, and soon you and those around you will feel enthusiastic.

Laugh at what bothers you~ Finding humour is often the only way to deal with something that really bothers you or seems daunting. Cracking jokes that you had to wash your floor anyway when a pipe breaks etc. will often help diffuse the tension of a situation and takes away some of the negative situation’s influence.

Bring positive energy to those around you ~ It’s not often anyone has ever made a friend or accomplished something meaningful by spreading negativity all the time. Positive energy, on the other hand, promotes good will and spreads enthusiasm to others. A smile radiates to others and is often contagious. Always try to leave the person you talk to feeling better than before. By building and promoting a positive social circle, you in a way help yourself. Also by staying away from those who are always negative will help you stay strong when you are a bit shaky. You can still be a good friend and help others but invest your energy in those who are willing to help themselves.

Monitor self-talk ~ What did you tell yourself today? Did you only complain about what went wrong with the day? Did you tear yourself down by blaming yourself or focusing on your inadequacies? What we think is reflected in how we feel. If all we think about is negative thoughts, our actions will be negative. If we believe in ourselves, and focus on the positive things life has to offer our perceptions in general change.

Visualize~ Many successful people visualize their success. Before you try to do anything, close your eyes and visualize yourself doing it well and really enjoying the moment.

Love Others ~ Bring encouragement, optimism, and hope to all that you meet. By helping others feel positive, you spread joy and goodwill. You attract what you give, by understanding, caring, accepting, and forgiving you will teach people how to treat others. Sometime’s others won’t reciprocate but at least you have been the better person and can be proud of your character.

Bottom line, negative things are going to happen in life that you can’t control or how others react but you can control how you react and how much power you give them. Feeding positive energy into a situation and controlling your reactions if nothing else will help you feel less of a “victim” and help you regain a little bit of balance when life seems crazy.

“Happiness is an attitude. We either make ourselves miserable, or happy and strong. The amount of work is the same.” ~Francesca Reigler
